Blog 10-Media Ethics
The case of Hazelwood vs. Kuhlmeier was about censoring information and articles in a high school newspaper. In this case, the articles talked about teen pregnancy and two kids from their school being pregnant. According to the students who wrote this article, they felt it was a violation of the first amendment due to freedom of speech. They believed censorship is not allowed under these premises. The court's decision was for the school and not the students because they stated that school's moral code should be followed when writing school news articles. I don't agree with this because students don't get a chance to express their voice. For example, if the student wanted to say something anti-christian and school's moral code stated that students should agree with christian views, it isn't fair to the student. This is my opinion on this case.
Blog 9 - Propaganda in Advertising/PR
I found the advertisement for coke vs. Pepsi where Pepsi wins.
This shows the black and white fallacy where it shows either you go with Pepsi or be left out. This technique says it either you either with us or the "enemy". In the end, the advertisement also states "nothing else is better than a Pepsi."
Also common folks appeal is depicted. Common folks appeal shows people who are working, middle class and plain. This advertisement shows two working class men who have the choice to choose Pepsi. They use body language which plain folks depict such as wanting to be competitive and not left out.

Blog 8 -Electonic News
Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown campaign is a very big story in the news.
San Jose Mercury News- takes a very liberal view on this story. Whenever Whitman says something bad about Jerry Brown. Mercury News brings in someone that has a democrat viewpoint saying that Meg Whitman left out an important fact. http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_15581017?nclick_check=1
LA Times- takes a very Republican viewpoint on this. They praise Meg Whitman for asking to see Jerry Brown records. They say that she would be willing to do the same. He doesn't need to hide anything if he is so "good" according to them. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/07/whitman-requests-rival-browns-official-records.html
Cal Coast News- takes on a creeping bias. Even thought they look like they support Jerry Brown. They are creeping towards Meg by saying she is smart and people should take another look at her. Cal Coast News says she has a strategic campaign and uses a Republican speaker as their voice. http://calcoastnews.com/2010/06/meg-whitman-the-71-million-candidate/

Blog 7-Internet
Looking up social networking sites on Wikipedia, I was shocked how many there were. There are about a 100 different ones, and I have only heard of 3. Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter are recognizable to me because they are popular websites, the other websites I didn't even know exist. Ironically, I know a social networking sites many Indians use because I am Indian called bharatstudent, I saw this website wasn't mentioned on the list.
I researched filmaffinity. This is a website which connects people who like movies. They let people see other people's ratings on movies. They give update information of movies to movie watchers around the globe. They also tell the top movies of each week. They tell what movies people have recommended helping you choose a movie to watch.
I use Facebook very rarely . I only use it as a phone book and too see what others are doing who I haven't met in a long time. Other than that I am not very interested in social networking sites. I think it is a false addiction. I would rather pick up the phone and talk to someone. I would improve the sites I use by including skype this would let me talk to a person I haven't met in a long time but at the same time still see their background on Facebook.
Facebook really helps me when I am deciding what country to travel too. Seeing other people's pictures and insights give me an idea of where to go next. For example, we are planning to go to Indonesia after seeing a friend really liked it there and it looks really pretty.

Blog 5 - Movies
My mom loved going to the movies in 1980. She described it as an experience, audiences would anticipate for. They would wait days on end for a movie. Then they would walk to the movie theater, instead of going in a car. This would give them time to heighten the experience. They would discuss how the movie would be. Back then they didn't have many newspaper movie critics to give reviews and had to watch movies based on word of mouth. She is from India and watched movies as a teen there. She said there were two lines for movies- women and men. Women ware accommodate for first. She remembers watching the movie Rocky. In those days in India only one English movie was shown and rarely. The theater had two floors of seating. Her father and her sat in the balcony. It was packed with people. She remembers thinking that the movie was real. It was like magic. She says she cried a lot and needed a handkerchief. It was very impacting because it gave her a closer bond with her family.

Blog 2 - Media Impact
I plan on doing a research paper on advertising. My hypothesis is that television advertisers are savvy and use the kind of appeal that works with the masses. I plan on doing a content analysis by seeing the different types of appeal used at prime time on TV. Further, I plan on doing a survey using random sampling to see what type of appeal people respond to. I predict that the trend in the type of appeal used by TV and the type of appeal people respond to will closely match.
Blog 1 - Media Autobiography
Books are a daily part of my life. I like reading them in my bed. They provide an escape from the real world for me. I like reading books from different cultures to see the similarities and differences with the American culture. Growing up, I used to read many Amelia Bedelia books because they were funny. Then I advanced to Mrs. Piggy Wiggy. Now I still read funny books, but I tend to enjoy travel books and mystery more.
Getting up in the morning the first thing I like to do is grab the daily newspaper. I like it fresh and crisp. The first thing I read is the comics, followed by the weather. I also like the News of the Weird. Some irritating things the newspaper does is stick some items in different places each day making it confusing for the reader. Growing up I would be the first to wake up even on a Saturday just to read the newspaper.
In my high school, we used to have magazines in the library; they are the first thing I would run to read whenever I was there. I enjoy getting celebrity gossip from celebrity magazines. I like magazines because they have a lot of interesting pictures in them. Also I like how magazines have an interesting story on the last page. that is usually what I read first.
Movies are always fun to watch with friends. I always like a movie with a Buddhist meaning on how we shouldn't be materialistic. I don't like movies which are 3-D because they cause headaches for me. I like movies with a meaning.
I like to listen to recordings in a long car ride. Most of my recordings are music based. I also like books which are recorded if the person speaking has an animated voice.
Radio was the place where I got my information when I was little before it was published in a newspaper. I like how it provided entertainment and news at the same time. We still have a radio in my house and we listen to fun talk shows.
For the first 10 years in my life I didn't have a TV. This meant I solely got news from radio and newspaper. When we did get TV, I still rarely viewed it . Now we only have 5 channels on it with no cable. I enjoy watching the same types of items I used to receive on the radio: entertainment and news. I like watching late night comedy shows.
Internet is very frustrating for me. There are too many things you can do which overwhelms me. Although it is great too because i can make this blog!!!!
